You may know Rachael Hunnisett, National Account Lead as the face of our popular National Webinar series. But who is the person behind the camera? We caught up with Rachael to find out more.

How did you come to work in mortgages?

I qualified as an adviser when I was 19 after being knocked back for a mortgage admin role. Wanting to prove them wrong, I googled local broker firms, made a list and called them all, until one thankfully offered me an opportunity to join them as a self-employed adviser, which motivated me to qualify pretty quickly! The rest is history.

What do you love most about your job?

It has to be the people! No two days are the same in business development. Over the past 4 years the brokers in my region and I have been through some difficult times together, experienced the highs and the lows of the industry. I think that’s wonderfully unique, in the intermediary world we’re great at pulling together.

Webinars, where did it all begin?

May 2020. I needed to find a way to cascade criteria to lots of brokers during the pandemic, and as things were changing quickly and the mortgage market was reacting to the impact of COVID-19 I began using Microsoft Teams to host webinars and they’ve evolved ever since. Webinars are now a key part of the way we work to support brokers and their clients and when my first webinar drew in a crowd of 7 brokers, I never imagined we would be where we are today. 3,110 people registered for the 5-part series of national webinars in the spring. And the feedback I’ve had from brokers who’ve reached out to say they watched the live stream from their board room or as part of their team meeting – I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that if I’m honest.

What career highlight are you most proud of?

In 2020 I won BDM of the year and Colleague of the year in Skipton’s annual star awards. It was pretty surreal winning an award on a video call and having a moment of elation, then still going downstairs to pop dinner on for the kids and carry on as usual, but it’s an experience I’ll never forget.

What motivates you?

I love the idea of trying to leave my little corner of the world a better place than when I found it. I’m passionate about equal opportunities and inclusion, any opportunity I have to engage with inclusion in financial services, I jump at the chance. You may have seen me speaking at events about this before, I’m no expert, but to speak out about such topics is an opportunity that not everyone gets, and I feel a level of responsibility to do that justice. I’ve been so lucky to have fantastic role models and mentors in my career; I hope to pay that forward. That to me, is success.

What excites you most about the future?

I love that in this industry we openly embrace change, there are so many exciting things on the horizon in the mortgage sector from new product offerings to technology disruptors to modern methods of construction. Wherever you look there is something new to see. It’s a great time to work in the intermediary space, we are all so very lucky.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t be afraid to let go with one hand before you grab on with the other.
