Community Giving: Introducing the YMCA DownsLink Group

Our judges loved reading through your nominations for Community Giving. It wasn't easy to select the 40 successful nominations because there were so many fantastic causes to choose from.

In the following months we will be giving you insight into some of our successful nominees. You'll find out who they are, what they do and why they were nominated.

YMCA DownsLink Group

YMCA DownsLink provide housing and support to over 750 young people every day within their accommodation projects. In addition to accommodation projects, DownsLink also support over 15,000 children, young people and families through projects that run across local communities.

YMCA DownsLink Group were nominated by Mike McKernan from Wooton & Bean Financial Solutions Ltd who says, "I have supported the charity personally for several years, helping to support and taking part in their sponsored sleep out, 'Sleep Easy' and an annual 'challenge' mountain bike ride. I know from first-hand experience how difficult young people with troubled backgrounds, mental health issues and housing problems can find life and greatly respect the hard work done by the charity locally. It is a privilege to have been successful in nominating them for Skipton's generous donation."

Hannah Barrett from the charity was delighted to receive the donation from Skipton Building Society and says "YMCA DownsLink Group (YMCA DLG) is one of the biggest providers of youth services across Sussex and Surrey, working with over 10,000 vulnerable young people every year. The young people we support are typically aged 16-25, either homeless or at risk of homelessness, and many have already experienced significant trauma in their lives. YMCA DLG provide young people with not only a safe space to stay, but also essential support such as counselling, life skills, and learning and education opportunities. We are so grateful for Skipton Building Society's support which will help us to support young people to move towards a positive future".

Rachael Hunnisett

Meeting with the YMCA DownsLink Group in Brighton as part of Skipton's Community Giving campaign was a true delight. Learning more of the work YMCA DLG do to support young people within their community and promote overall wellbeing made presenting the £1,000 donation a true highlight for me. Such a fantastic initiative making a real difference to people's lives

Community Giving

Community Giving is a way of giving something back to our communities. We gave brokers and employees of intermediary firms an opportunity to nominate a housing or homelessness cause which they actively support to receive one of 40 £1,000 donations.

A panel of Skipton colleagues then selected the successful nominations. You can read more about the selection process and view the full list of our 40 successful nominees on our Community Giving page.
