Community Giving in Action update

Publish Date: 26/03/21

2020 was another successful year for Community Giving and we couldn’t have done it without your nominations. Thanks to you, 40 causes that carry out essential work in support of housing and homelessness received a £1,000 donation.

We've been speaking to some of the successful nominees about their work in the community and how they plan to use their £1,000 Community Giving donation.

Here's what three of them had to say:

Caritas Anchor House

Caritas Anchor House is a 140-bed homelessness charity based in Newham, East London.

“This fantastic donation from Skipton Building Society will help us to run our core service, supporting those who have experienced homelessness to move onto their next chapters. Thanks to donations like this, we are able to support over 250 homeless people a year, helping vulnerable members of society to live independently and get back on their feet.”

Crawley Open House

Crawley Open House provides support and services for those suffering the effects of homelessness, unemployment, loneliness, discrimination, and other forms of social exclusion and their support is available to anyone in need.

“It was wonderful to receive the £1,000 donation. We were so grateful to be nominated, and even more pleased to have been selected for such a generous gift. It is especially welcome as so many of our usual supporters and donors are unable to help as they used to, due to this wretched pandemic, whilst the demand for our accommodation, care, food and services remains as high or higher than ever.

Crawley Open House has stayed open throughout the crisis, and we’ve sadly been as busy as ever with a full hostel, 3 full move-on houses and over the summer there were nearly 100 people temporarily accommodated in the town from Horsham, Mid Sussex and Crawley Councils. On a positive note we opened a suite of 8 new move-on rooms and a shared kitchen/living area above the hostel a couple of weeks ago, for those leaving the hostel with a need for a ‘halfway house’ before returning to independent living.

Thanks again on behalf of all who rely on Crawley Open House – we can only continue to do what we do because of generous and thoughtful people like you. Please pass on our thanks to all involved at Skipton Building Society for Intermediaries.”

Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness (KCAH)

KCAH supports single people facing housing crisis’ in the Kingston Borough and helps to rebuild their lives. They offer more than just advice, shelter and food and provide lasting solutions that restore the self-esteem and confidence of vulnerable people, helping them out of the vicious circle of homelessness.

“We’re made up that our charity is one of the Community Giving recipients this year – a real boost to the end of what has been a really difficult and pressurised year for everyone.

The donation will be used towards our activities programme for people who are or who have faced homelessness. Although we have not been able to run quite so many activities consistently due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have still been able to hold events like gardening and bike maintenance clubs, trips to outdoor places like Kew and Wisley, as well as initiate online education events. Fishing trips are also popular.

Activities tackle feelings of loneliness and isolation, and promote confidence, self-esteem, and general wellbeing – essential factors to breaking the cycle of homelessness. A big thank you!”
